What are the first steps I need to take if I want to study in Canada?

I have been accepted to a Study Program in Canada. What now?

Once you have received your official letter of acceptance confirming that your spot in a learning institution in Canada, you will need to apply for a Study Permit. It is advisable to reach out to us as soon as you get your letter so we can prepare a border support document package for you.
For students planning to come to Quebec, it is mandatory to apply for the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) before you apply for the Study Permit. For more information on how to apply for your Study Permit and CAQ, check our blog posts with detailed instructions.

 

How can I obtain a Study Permit for Canada?

The study permit is a document that will allow you to study in Canada. A study permit is usually issued for the length of your program of study, plus an additional 90 days which prepare you to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.
To apply for a study permit, you need a valid passport or travel document, an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution, and proof that you can support yourself while you’re in Canada. Depending on your situation, you might also need to show the results of a medical exam and/or go to an interview in your country. You can apply for a Study Permit online on the IRCC website.
If your application is approved, you will receive a letter that needs to be shown to an officer when you enter Canada. If you are from a country that requires an Electronic Travel Authorization or a visitor visa, that will be issued together with your study permit.

Can I study in Canada without a Study Permit?

In some cases, you are allowed to study in Canada without a Study Permit:
– If your course is less than 6 months
– If these studies are not part of a longer program
– You will complete the program within the time you have been approved to stay in Canada

 

What is a CAQ and do I need it for my studies?

The CAQ, or the Certificate of Acceptance of Quebec, is the permission the Government of Quebec grants to temporary foreign students. If you want to study in Quebec, you will need both the CAQ and the Study Permit to register for and attend your courses.
